Favorite quote from the author:

In Love Warrior, bestselling author Glennon Doyle Melton tells the story of how she found herself in the midst of an emotional and spiritual crisis that threatened to tear her apart. In the face of betrayal, she discovered the tools to rebuild her marriage and renew her faith in love.

The book is a gorgeous and inspiring account of how we can all take charge of our lives and end the source of our hardship. Through acts of strength and bravery, Doyle managed to turn her misery into an inspiring chronic that motivates anyone who yearns for change and a little miracle in their life.

Here are three of my favorite lessons from the book:

  1. You’d be surprised to find out how many people share your struggles, regardless of their nature.
  2. Let your instincts guide you, especially when you feel like something is wrong.
  3. Pain is a natural part of life, and accepting it will set you free.

Let’s delve deeper into the beautiful lessons Glennon shared with us and get to know ourselves a little better!

Lesson 1: There are people out there who understand you and share your struggles, so don’t think you’re alone.

Glennon Doyle was just another girl in college trying to fit in. She had a problem with her image and often fell for social standards when it came to choosing health over appearances. Like many of us, she ignored her problems in the hope they would go away – but they didn’t.

In fact, she used her problem to hide from the world. Bulimia served as a way to lose weight and fit in with the other girls with eating disorders, and excessive alcohol helped her be more fun at parties.

It’s not uncommon for people to hide their problems under basic pretexts and go on with their daily lives. Over the years, bulimia and, later, alcoholism had provided her with a hiding place where she didn’t have to confront her problems, till everything collapsed.

Then, something happened: Glennon found herself in recovery. After getting married, she realized that neither marriage, a loving husband, nor her kids would help her become healthy again. Now it’s time for you to learn that too and realize you’re not alone.

Just like she found a new way of being herself: one where the vulnerability was no longer scary, but empowering instead, you can too!

Lesson 2: Life will keep serving you hard lessons until you finally listen to your inner voice.

Sometimes we have to know rock bottom before we can fully recover. That’s what happened to Glennon when she found out about Craig’s affairs.

She also found out that he’s been cheating in between her three pregnancies. After a somewhat peaceful time in her life after thinking that she fully overcame bulimia and her alcohol addiction, this devastating news arises.

What could be worse? Nothing, she finds. Without anything to lose, she starts to finally listen to her inner voice that she’s been shutting down her entire life. She starts writing, and it sets her heart free. Expressing her thoughts gained her online virality, although this wasn’t her aim.

It was in this period of darkness that she wrote “Love Warrior.” This book tells the story of how she found healing from the pain of infidelity and began to understand herself better as a result of it—a process that eventually led her back to Craig.

It was then that she discovered that her life lifelong lesson was to listen to her inner voice more and stop being a people pleaser or silencing her problems. That’s when things really take a turn and you can discover your true calling.

Lesson 3: Knowing and accepting pain is the purest form of authenticity and self-love.

Pain is a part of life. It is the price we pay for being alive and aware, and no one can escape it. But pain does not have to be a source of suffering. In fact, accepting pain as a part of life is perhaps the purest form of authenticity and self-love.

By accepting pain as a part of life as Glennon did, you acknowledge that you are human and that you are imperfect. You recognize that your own actions will cause others pain at times and that this is only natural. You accept these things as facts of life because they are true, and by doing so, you own yourself more fully than ever.

Accepting pain can be liberating: by owning all parts of yourself—even those parts that are painful—you become free from worry about what others think or feel about your behavior. This is when you feel free to share your vulnerability, just like Glennon did in her memoirs on her blog.

In time, the blog changed her life, as she became an online sensation and created a space free of judgment where women felt less alone in their struggles. Accepting pain also helped Glennon realize that she is stronger than everything she’s been through, otherwise, she wouldn’t be where she is.
